Bill Analysis
The bill would amend the Education Code to require school districts to adopt a policy that requires school district peace officers or school resource officers to complete an education and training program. The bill would amend the Occupations Code to require the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement to develop this training program within certain guidelines provided by the bill. The bill would also require TCOLE to adopt rules to require school district peace officers and school resource officers to complete the required education and training programs before 120 days of commission or placement in a school.
Vote Recommendation Notes
This bill would provide training to help school-based peace officers to better protect the life and liberty of our students and teachers, and become more effective at countering crime within our public school hallways. We support HB 2684 under our personal responsibility principle as school-based peace officers should be adequately trained for that unique environment.
