Fiscal Notes

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated. However, There may be costs to local law enforcement agencies for additional reports sent to the Office of the Attorney General within a certain time frame. The Harris County Sheriff's office estimates an operational cost of $13,000 per year for additional hours needed to prepare and file paperwork.


Bill Analysis

HB 1036 would amend the chapter entitled “General Duties of Officers” within the Code of Criminal Procedure to reflect new reporting requirements for officers involved with injuries or death. The report would include specifics on the date, location, weapons involved, demographics, and details related to injuries or deaths. The data procured from these new reports will be posted for the public to see on the attorney general’s website. The data will be compiled each year and submitted to the governor and the standing legislative committees with primary jurisdiction over criminal justice matters.
