Bill Analysis

Summary: SB 396 would extend death benefits to eligible survivors of correctional employees of the Texas Juvenile Justice Department and certified Department of Public Safety employees who directly support law enforcement in the field and die of injuries sustained in the line of duty.

Analysis: The death benefit is a one-time payment of $250,000 to the eligible survivors of a covered employee who dies in the line of duty. SB 396 would expand the coverage to include state employees not currently covered. While this may add to the cost of government, it may also serve to allow state employees who put themselves in harm’s way to be financially responsible for their dependents if they are killed in the line of duty. We are neutral on this legislation.
