Bill Analysis

Summary of Legislation: This legislation continues the Texas Commission on the Arts for 12 years.  Additionally this bill enacts recommendations from the Sunset Commission to Clarify the Commission’s statutory authority to award grants to support the arts in Texas, and reduce the size of the board from 17-9 members.

Notes: Taxpayers should not be forced to contribute money to artistic endeavors through government subsidies to the arts. There is no compelling reason for the state to continue the Texas Commission on the Arts. The arts are best funded through private philanthropic efforts and marketplace competition. Letting this program sunset will save taxpayers millions of dollars, promote private investment in the arts, and enhance free markets.

We encourage legislators to oppose SB 202.
