Summary of Legislation: Under current law if the Legislature names a specific portion of highway, The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is responsible for designing, building, and erecting corresponding highway markers. Some such projects have been funded through private donations but TxDOT has chosen to fund some projects using state funds. This legislation requires the Department of Transportation to accept any and all grants or donations to aid in the construction and maintenance of a highway marker used to mark "specific state highway names" and prohibits TxDOT from designing, building, or erecting such markers unless a grant or donation has been made to fund the project.
Analysis: This legislation supports limited government by cutting state spending. This legislation does not interfere with TxDOT's ability or obligation to maintain highway markers.
