Bill Caption

Relating to the manner of carrying a handgun by a person who holds a license under Subchapter H, Chapter 411, Government Code.

Fiscal Notes

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

SB 550 would make carrying a handgun in any kind of holster, as opposed to only a shoulder or belt holster, an exception to various criminal offenses for licensed handgun owners. This would effectively allow handguns to be legally carried by a license holder in any type of holster rather than only in a belt or shoulder holster.

Vote Recommendation Notes

Texas Action supports SB 550 because it would advance individual liberty and limited government. As gun holsters other than shoulder or belt holsters exist, licensed handgun owners should be free to use them without fear of criminal prosecution. SB 550 would eliminate an unnecessary distinction in state law that restricts the freedom of licensed handgun owners to use any holster they choose.
