Bill Caption

Relating to the procedure for donating juror reimbursements.

Fiscal Notes

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

Under current law, people who serve jury duty are entitled to receive compensation for time and travel expenses. Jurors are given donation cards at the beginning of their service letting them know that they may choose to donate their all or a portion of their compensation to a number of different funds designed to benefit the victims of crimes, or to a veterans treatment court.

SB 1179 would amend the law to require that the donation cards be given to jurors at the conclusion of their jury service rather than at the beginning.

Vote Recommendation Notes

SB 1179 would make a procedural change that does not affect our liberty principles. Texas Action is neutral on SB 1179.
