Bill Caption

Relating to the exemption of tuition and laboratory fees at public institutions of higher education for certain paramedics.

Fiscal Notes

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

HB 582 would exempt students who are municipally employed paramedics from tuition and laboratory fees at public institutions of higher education. Certain eligibility requirements would apply.

Vote Recommendation Notes

Texas Action opposes HB 582 on the principle of limited government because the bill would expand a tuition and fee exemption for a preferred class of student. Preferential treatment of this nature is inconsistent with the concept of equal treatment under the law; it also shifts the cost burden to other students who are already paying the exorbitant cost of higher education.
