Bill Caption

Relating to the criminal offense of making a false report to a peace officer, federal special investigator, law enforcement employee, corrections officer, or jailer.

Fiscal Notes

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

Currently, it is a Class B misdemeanor if an individual knowingly makes a false report to a peace officer, federal special agent, or law enforcement agent. SB 405 would add corrections officers and jailers to the list of officials to whom making a false report is a crime.

Vote Recommendation Notes

Texas Action supports SB 405 because it advances the principles of personal responsibility and individual liberty. The bill would hold individuals who make false reports to corrections officers responsible for their actions as well as protect the individual liberty of people who would have been the victims of false reports.
