Bill Caption

Relating to challenges by school districts and open-enrollment charter schools to accountability determinations.

Fiscal Notes

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

SB 2285 would require the School Accountability Advisory Committee to look into every challenge of an accountability rating regardless of the basis of the challenge. This bill also prohibits the Texas Education Agency (TEA) commissioner from limiting a challenge to an accountability rating relating to a data or calculation error attributable to the school district or open-enrollment charter school.

The commissioner would be required to change the scores if the initial scores were wrong and would also give the commissioner the option to indicate that the school will not be rated that year if the corrected score is lower than the initial one.

Vote Recommendation Notes

Texas Action recommends supporting SB 2285 because it promotes our principle of limited government. This bill would ensure that the TEA makes corrections to accountability scores that are potentially wrong and prevents schools from being stuck with a negative rating that was based on errant data or a mistake.
