Bill Caption

Relating to the prosecution of health care fraud; creating a criminal offense.

Fiscal Notes

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

HB 2894 would replace the term "Medicaid Fraud" in the Penal Code with the term "Health Care Fraud" which would have the practical effect of expanding prosecution of fraudulent health care claims against public health care programs beyond Medicaid. Other conforming changes would be made throughout various statutes.

Vote Recommendation Notes

Texas Action supports HB 2894 because it advances the principles of limited government and personal responsibility. This bill enables the government to save money by effectively prosecuting offenders who are committing fraud under all public health care programs, not just medicaid.
