Relating to preventing the loss of benefits by certain retirees of
the Teacher Retirement System of Texas who resume service.
No fiscal impact to the state is anticipated.
Currently, retired teachers who resume employment in a state public educational institution may work part-time for no more than 90 days in the school year without losing benefit payments.
Hb 2227 would provide a process to allow retired teachers who return to teaching on a part-time basis to exceed the prescribed limitation on time worked due to an exigent event that is beyond the retiree's control, including a weather-related event, without being subject to loss of benefits or excessive fines.
Texas Action is neutral on HB 2227 because it does not affect our liberty principles.
