Bill Caption

Relating to deferred payment of ad valorem taxes for certain persons serving in the United States armed forces.

Fiscal Notes

Passage of the bill would allow eligible active duty members of the armed forces to defer property taxes without penalty or interest regardless of whether there is a war or national emergency, the reduction of interest, and the removal of penalties would create a cost to the state through the school finance formulas by increasing the number of property tax deferrals.

Bill Analysis

Current law allows eligible active duty military service members to defer property taxes without penalty or interest in times of war or national emergency. This bill would allow eligible service members to defer property taxes without penalty or interest regardless of whether there is a war or national emergency.

Vote Recommendation Notes

This bill would expand the circumstances under which a current tax deferral option may be exercised. This would not relieve eligible beneficiaries from their obligation to pay their property taxes or prohibit interest from accruing on taxes which remain unpaid after the deferral period expires. This bill does not affect our liberty principles and we remain neutral.
