Bill Caption

Relating to the mandatory spinal screening of public and private school students.

Fiscal Notes

From the LBB: No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

This bill would require the executive commissioner to develop a process to notify a parent or guardian of a child in a public or private school of the spinal screening requirement, the purpose of the requirement, the noninvasive nature of the procedure, and the method of declining to comply with the requirement. The bill also changes the rules of the screening to allowing the executive commissioner to adopt rules to consider the most recent nationally accepted research in determining appropriate ages for the spinal screening.

Vote Recommendation Notes

This bill is in keeping with individual liberty and limited government by providing information to parents on how they can opt their child out of the mandatory screening. It is the responsibility of the parent to make health care decisions for their child, not the responsibility of the government. For this reason, we support this bill.
