Bill Caption

Relating to the public high school graduation credit requirements for a language other than English.

Bill Analysis

To graduate high school in Texas, a student currently must earn two foreign language credits. This bill would compel the Board of Education to adopt criteria that allows students to who have taken a dual language immersion program in elementary school to graduate high school needing only one foreign language credit. Students who take a dual language immersion program in elementary school would thus be able to graduate high school with one fewer credits than they would otherwise need.

Vote Recommendation Notes

This bill would offer, though limited, greater ability for students to meet the requirements imposed by the state. We believe this promotes individual liberty and therefore support SB 671.
