Bill Analysis

SB 588 would allow private employers to give notice to the Texas Veterans Commission of veteran’s preference hiring policies to make available on the commission’s website.

Vote Recommendation Notes

This bill creates a voluntary reporting procedure for private entities to announce they have a veteran's employment preference policy. Our objection to bills such as these, though well intended, is that using government to market certain business practices interferes with the free market. Government resources, however well intended, should not be used to market one group of people over another. These businesses already have the resources to make it known that they would prefer to hire veterans and government action is not necessary. For this reason, we oppose SB 588.
