Bill Caption

Relating to the jurisdiction of county and justice courts in civil matters.

Fiscal Notes

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

Under current law, during civil cases where the matter exceeds $200 but is less than $10,000, a county court has concurrent jurisdiction with justice courts. If this bill passes, civil jurisdiction would be expanded to civil cases in which the matter of controversy can be valued no more than $20,000.

Vote Recommendation Notes

This bill would allow more cases to be settled in civil courts which satisfies our commitment to limited government. Civil cases are more about a victim being made whole after they have been wronged and this bill more appropriate focus resources within the judicial branch of government. As such, we support SB 409.
