Bill Caption

Relating to the temporary approval of a private or independent college or university to continue to participate in the tuition equalization grant program.

Fiscal Notes

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

Under current law, private or independent colleges and universities may be granted a temporary approval to participate in the tuition equalization grant program for up to two years after losing their accreditation while they seek new accreditation. This bill would allow a second two year renewal to be granted.

Vote Recommendation Notes

Allowing higher education institutions to avoid the consequences of their actions for extended periods of time removes accountability and incentives to comply with the rules established for the program. Actions have consequences and the state should not remove accountability measures for extended periods of time when it comes to programs that involve state funds. Because this violates our limited government principle, we oppose SB 331.
