Bill Caption

Relating to parental rights and information regarding certain intervention strategies used with public school students.

Fiscal Notes

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

Under current law, parents are entitled to certain information about their child with regard to their enrollment in a public school or open-enrollment charter school. SB 1153 would also entitle parents to information related to intervention strategies and assistance provided to their child for learning difficulties. It would also authorize the state to require schools submit such information to the Public Education Information Management System.

Vote Recommendation Notes

This bill supports the principle of limited government and individual liberty by explicitly granting parents the right to information about a school’s teaching strategies for their children in cases of learning disabilities. Because this increases transparency between parents and school districts, we support SB 1153.
