Bill Caption

Relating to nonlawyer representation in an appeal of an eviction suit.

Fiscal Notes

No fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

Under current law, any party of an eviction suit may represent themselves or may be represented by authorized agents who do not need to be attorneys. This bill would allow parties in an appeal of an eviction suit in a county or district court to be represented by the party’s authorized agent, or by an employee, owner, officer, or partner, none of whom would need to be an attorney.

Vote Recommendation Notes

Allowing parties to be represented by someone other than an attorney in eviction suites upholds our commitment to individual liberty. For this reason we support this bill.
