Bill Analysis

HB 3234 would make information and an internal record or notation of a law enforcement agency that deals with the detection, investigation, or prosecution of a crime in relation to an investigation that did not result in conviction or deferred adjudication public information if each person who is subject of the information is deceased, consents to the release of the information, or the information relates to a peace officer who is the subject of a criminal or internal investigation arising out of the officer’s involvement with the detection, investigation, or prosecution of a crime.

Vote Recommendation Notes

This bill enhances our limited government principle by making information regarding a peace officer subject to a criminal or internal investigation arising out of the officer’s involvement with the detection, investigation, or prosecution of a crime. Our officers should be held to a high standard and making this information public adds an accountability measure. We support HB 3234.
