Relating to the authority of certain persons to defer or abate the collection of ad valorem taxes on a person's homestead.

Fiscal Notes

From the Legislative Budget Board: no significant fiscal implication to the state is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

HB 217 would amend the Tax Code to add disabled veterans to those eligible to defer collection of an ad valorem tax on that individual's residence homestead, abate a suit to collect a delinquent tax, or abate a sale to foreclose a tax lien.

Vote Recommendation Notes

Specialized tax laws designed to benefit one preferred class of people to the exclusion of others is a violation of limited government. We support a tax system that is low rate, broad based, and treats everyone equally. For this infringement on individual liberty, we oppose HB 217. We would withdraw our objection if the bill were amended to make the benefits of this legislation broadly applicable to all taxpayers.
