Bill Analysis

HB 2087 would regulate the use of personal student information by a school district or campus that is collected digitally (online or through mobile applications). This bill would prohibit the use of collected information for targeted advertising or to create a student profile not related to a school purpose and would require that site operators take reasonable measures to protect student information. Disclosure and use of student information would be permitted for school purposes by national assessment providers to provide information that will help determine educational scholarship allocation, and other academic justifications.

Vote Recommendation Notes

This bill supports the principle of limited government by regulating the use of personal information collected by state entities for the purpose of education. For this reason, we support HB 2087.
