Bill Caption
Relating to increasing the punishment for the offense of aggravated promotion of prostitution.
Fiscal Notes
From the LBB: no significant fiscal implication to the state is done.
Bill Analysis
Under current law, the penalty for aggravated promotion of prostitution is a third-degree felony. If this bill passes, that same crime would be increased to a felony of the second-degree.
Vote Recommendation Notes
The aggravated promotion of prostitution is a horrendous crime that should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. However, unless there is credible evidence that the existing penalties do not approximate justice, we oppose increasing penalties. Under current law, someone convicted of this crime could face up to 10 years in prison and up to $10,000 in fines. We oppose this bill because we view this increase in penalty as an unnecessary expansion of government.
