Bill Caption

Relating to exemption of certain firefighters and police officers from jury service.

Fiscal Notes

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

This bill would add to the list of people who are exempt from performing jury duty. If passed, firefighters and police officers who are permanent, paid employees of a police or fire department would be exempt from having to serve.

Vote Recommendation Notes

Giving privileged exemptions to one group of citizens at the expense of other groups of citizens is not the proper role of government, which should protect equal rights for all. At the same time, requiring these public safety employees to participate in jury duty would impose additional costs on taxpayers and could burden smaller municipalities which can ill afford to lose the services of their public safety employees to jury duty. For these reasons we remain neutral.
