SB 2022 seeks to make some administrative changes to the appointment and qualifications of the directors of the Driftwood Economic Development Municipal Management District, to allow the district to develop and implement water drainage facilities, and to allow the district to engage in economic development activities.
The bill would allow the district to "establish and provide for the administration of one or more programs to promote state or local economic development and to stimulate business and commercial activity in the district including programs to make loans and grants of public money."
We oppose SB 2022 because it is not the proper role of government to "make loans and grants of public money" for economic development purposes. The idea that government can and should play such a role in the economy has always been an insidious backdoor towards more government which distorts the marketplace, picks economic winners and losers, and infringes on individual liberty. For these reasons we oppose this legislation.
