Bill Analysis

Summary: This legislation would establish a Veterans Entrepreneur Program to be administered through The Texas Veterans Commission whereby the commission would be directed to assist veterans in facilitating and promoting entrepreneurship and business ownership.

Analysis: This bill would direct the commission to actively promote and perform outreach functions, collaborate and recommend different state and federal assistance programs.  This bill would direct the commission to provide guidance and information about opportunities for veteran entrepreneurs and business owners. We honor our veterans and we do not believe that the state should supplant the role of private charity in offering such programs. In addition to services provided through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, many charities around the nation provide a wide variety of opportunity and assistance to veterans. A partial list of such charities can be found here. Because this legislation expands government to perform a function better performed by the private sector, we oppose SB 1476.
