Bill Analysis

Summary: HB 710 would prohibit police officers from using their title and status as an officer to advertise for private businesses, excluding those directly related to law enforcement.

Analysis: HB 710 limits the government by preventing its employees from trading on their status in the community by advertising for a private company in an official capacity. Police officers advertising for specific businesses would constitute, at the very least, an in kind subsidy to that business. The government should steer clear of interfering in the free market. Allowing police officers to advertise in their official capacity for a particular business may create a completive advantage for that business. This is not the proper role of limited government. We support HB 710.
