Summary: Current law requires health care facilities, other than pediatric and adolescent hospitals, to report to the Department of State Health Services the incidence of surgical site infections that happen during certain procedures, such as colon surgeries and vascular procedures. HB 3285 would require health care facilities to also note whether any infection resulted in the death of a patient.
Analysis: This legislation adds minor regulations to an already heavily regulated industry. However, as providers for Medicare and Medicaid patients, hospitals do submit themselves to the extra scrutiny that is associated with accepting public funding. We remain neutral on this legislation.
