Relating to the expiration and extension of certain public health orders issued by a health authority.
No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.
SB 967 would apply to public health orders imposed on more than one individual, animal, place, or object. Such a public health order issued by a health authority would expire on the eighth day following the date the order is issued unless before the eighth day the order is extended by majority vote of the appropriate governing authority.
SB 967 represents a limit on the kind of governmental overreach experienced during COVID-19. A limit on public health orders by oversight from duly elected officials is useful in preventing unelected bureaucrats from wielding unchecked authority over those they are appointed to serve. This is a net benefit for the principles of limited government, individual liberty, free market, and private property rights. Texas Action supports SB 967.
