Bill Caption

Relating to the eligibility for unemployment compensation of certain employees who leave the workplace to care for a minor child.

Fiscal Notes

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

HB 3697 would expand access to unemployment benefits by allowing a person to qualify for the benefits if they leave the workplace to care for their child due to an unexpected illness, accident, or other unforeseeable event. The bill specifies that this only applies if the child is a minor and if no other reasonable option to care for the child is available.

Vote Recommendation Notes

Texas Action is opposed to HB 3697 because expanding unemployment benefits is not the proper role of government and violates free market principles.
