Bill Caption

Relating to the definition of "indigent defense compensation expenditures" for purposes of the adjustment of a county's no-new-revenue maintenance and operations rate to reflect increases in those expenditures.

Fiscal Notes

No fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

HB 3482 would revise the definition of "indigent defense compensation expenditures" for a tax year to include expenses associated with the operations of a public defender's office. This would affect a county's ability to adjust the no-new-revenue maintenance and operations rate in order to fund these expenses.

The change in law made by HB 3482 applies to the calculation of the no-new-revenue maintenance and operations rate for a county only for a tax year beginning on or after the effective date of HB 3482.

Vote Recommendation Notes

Texas Action is neutral on HB 3482.
