Bill Analysis

SB 1707 would allow school districts and the Texas School for the Deaf to enter into a memorandum of understanding with a local police department for the provision of school resource officers.

SB 1707 would require school boards to determine the duties of a school resource officer, security personnel, and peace officers on campus. These duties would be required to include enforcing the law and protecting people within their jurisdiction. A school board would be prohibited from assigning duties to a school resource officer, a peace officer, or security personnel that involve routine student discipline, administrative tasks, or regular contact with students outside of enforcing the law.
