Relating to the separation of services provided by an emergency services district.
No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.
SB 1579 would allow certain districts that were created to perform both fire prevention and emergency medical services to separate into two overlapping districts for the purposes for working out internal errors, and (according to the author), creating a more efficient process. Under current law, if any of these emergency districts have issues, they work out the issues with overlapping districts. It is important to note that this bill only would only apply to Harris County.
This bill would authorize an election to be held in Harris County and outline rules and procedures for the election and the appointment of a board. In addition, the creation of the new district would automatically be authorized to impose additional taxes in order to duplicate the other district.
Although we are hesitant not to oppose a bill that would inherently create a local tax, Texas Action remains neutral on SB 1579 because it appears to be a local issue.
