Bill Analysis

SB 1569 would prohibit members of the board of trustees, employees, and contractors (rather than just board members) from using state or local funds for promoting any candidate, measure, political party, political philosophy or public interest. This includes communications in support of or against bonds or candidates issued during work hours and using district equipment.

Vote Recommendation Notes

Texas Action supports SB 1569 on the basis of limited government, private property, and individual liberty. Tax dollars should not be used to promote political purposes because it advocates for causes with which taxpayers may not agree. This bill closes a loophole that previously allowed districts to circumvent this prohibition on the use of public funds for these purposes.
