Bill Caption

Relating to the establishment of a career mentoring pilot program for certain students who are veterans.

Fiscal Notes

No fiscal impact to the state is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

SB 1539 would require the Alamo Community College District to implement a pilot program to establish veteran interest groups for students who are veterans. Under the pilot program, student veterans would be assigned to a group with other student veterans and would be required to enroll in at least three of the same classes as the other students assigned to the group.

Students assigned to a group would be required to attend a weekly seminar led by a peer mentor and a staff facilitator in which the students would learn about issues related to the needs of student veterans, discuss and study time management strategies and other issues, and engage in campus life and other social opportunities.

Vote Recommendation Notes

This pilot program does not affect our liberty principles and we remain neutral. However, we are skeptical of the necessity of such a program as there are many charitable organizations currently focused on providing these services.
