Fiscal Notes

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

HB 872 would add surviving spouses of jailers and county jailers and guards to those eligible to receive benefits by the state. These benefits are paid to survivors of certain law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty who had not worked long enough to qualify for an annuity under an employees' retirement plan. The benefits include funeral expenses related to the deceased person and certain monthly financial assistance payments.  The bill updates procedures and responsibilities related to an employing entity reporting the circumstances of death and the consideration of whether the circumstances of death meet eligibility requirements. In addition, the bill would grant authority to the Attorney General to investigate an employer's failure to comply with the financial obligations to the survivors.
