HB 678 would allow for an American Sign Language course taken in elementary school to count as a foreign language credit in high school. Under current law, high school students need two foreign language credits in order to graduate. A dual language immersion program taken in elementary school can be counted as one foreign language credit, which was passed into law during the 85th legislative session.
Texas Action recommends supporting HB 678 because it promotes our principle of individual liberty. This bill would give students more options to obtain credit required to graduate high school.
