Bill Caption

Relating to soliciting from school districts served by a regional education service center certain information in conjunction with the annual evaluation of the center.

Fiscal Notes

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

HB 674 would require the commissioner of the Texas Education Agency to solicit information from school districts that are currently being assisted by regional education service centers. The commissioner would solicit information regarding the reliance of the district on the center for assistance in complying with state education laws and rules, and the specific education laws or rules with which compliance is most burdensome and expensive. The bill would also prohibit the solicited information from being considered when conducting an annual evaluation of a regional education service center.

Vote Recommendation Notes

Texas Action recommends supporting HB 674 because it promotes our principle of limited government. This bill would increase the communication between schools and TEA in an effort to help better address which particular laws and they find burdensome or expensive to comply with. Presumably this information would be used to form a basis for future legislation to reduce laws and rules that are overly burdensome for school districts to comply with. We support HB 674.
