Bill Analysis

Under current law, a specialty court may not operate until the judge, magistrate, or coordinator provides certain information to the criminal justice division of the governor's office and receives from that office written verification of the information having been provided. HB 2955 would substitute the Office of Court Administration in place of the criminal justice division of the governor's office for these purposes.

The bill would also require the Office of Court Administration to provide technical assistance to the specialty court programs, to coordinate with certain entities that provide services to specialty courts, monitor compliance of the specialty court system, and notify the criminal justice division of any specialty courts that are not in compliance with certain requirements.

Vote Recommendation Notes

Texas Action is neutral on HB 2955 as it neither advances nor hinders any of our liberty principles.
