HB 2677 would ban former officeholders and candidates that are required to register as lobbyists from using campaign funds to make political contributions or expenditures. The bill would additionally enact a two-year lobbying ban for former officeholders or candidates who make political contributions or expenditures from campaign funds. This bill specifically relates to a political contribution, political expenditure, direct campaign expenditure, or lobbying expenditure from funds that were intended for political contributions, reguardless of the acceptance date of the funds.
Texas Action supports HB 2677 as it advances our principles of individual liberty and limited government. Texas is in need of ethics reform, and this bill is a step in the right direction by increasing government transparency and reforming campaign finance laws.
