Relating to the intercollegiate athletics fee at Texas A&M University--San Antonio; authorizing a fee.
No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.
HB 1439 would authorize Texas A&M - San Antonio to charge students an intercollegiate athletics fee of not more than $10 per semester credit hour. The students would have to vote for the fee for it to go into affect and students could also vote to increase the fee. The fee would be for an intercollegiate athletics program.
This bill abridges the principle of limited government by authorizing an additional fee at a state university. For this reason, we oppose HB 1439.
The cost of higher education is already too high and the growing student debt problem is only worsening. The state should be looking for ways to cut the cost of higher education, not adding to it with yet another fee that increases the debt burden for college students.
