Bill Caption

Proposing a constitutional amendment repealing county authority to provide for manual labor poor houses and farms.

Bill Analysis

Under current law, the Texas constitution permits counties to provide poor houses and farms for manual labor. SJR 27 would propose a constitutional amendment on the November 7 ballot that would repeal this provision, thereby revoking the authority.

Vote Recommendation Notes

This bill supports the principles of limited government by allowing Texas voters to rescind the constitutional provision which grants counties authority which is no longer needed, no longer in use, and which if it were use would be considered a taxpayer subsidy. For these reasons we support SJR 27.
