Bill Caption
Relating to the creation of an open burn pit registry for certain service members and veterans.
Fiscal Notes
A negative impact of ($2,674,923) through the biennium ending August 31, 2019.
Bill Analysis
HB 283 would create an open burn pit and airborne hazard
exposure registry of service members and veterans for the purpose of outreach, education,
and advocacy. Included in the registry would be the service member’s name, address,
phone number, electronic address, location of service, and any medical
condition related to the exposure to open burn pit smoke or airborne hazards.
Vote Recommendation Notes
This bill violates our limited government principle because there is already a federal registry intended for the same purpose. It is the role of the federal government to monitor service members and veterans exposed to open burn pit smoke and airborne hazards and guide them to treatment. For these reasons, we oppose HB 283.
