Bill Caption

Relating to the county courts at law in Bexar County.

Fiscal Notes

No significant fiscal implication to the State.

Because the bill would not have statewide impact on units of local government of the same type or class, no comment is required by the rules of the House/Senate as to its probable fiscal implication on units of local government.

Bill Analysis

SB 909 would amend government code to allow any county courts in Bexar County to hear criminal cases and appeals de novo from the municipal and justice courts. The bill adds an additional court, Court No. 7, to courts that shall give preference to cases prosecuted under Section 22.01, Penal Code, and Section 22.07 or Section 22.072, Penal Code.

SB 909 would require judges be paid according to Section 25.0005, which states that a statutory county court judge shall be paid a total annual salary that is at minimum only $1,000 less than the total annual salary received by the county district judge. This would remove the requirement that the Bexar County statutory county court judges are paid a minimum salary of $25,000 but not more than the county district judge's salary.
