Bill Analysis
SB 6 would implement A-F ratings for public schools in Texas. The current code requires the equivalent of a pass-fail rating and beginning in 2016, would switch to a four category rating system. This bill would provide that an A rating equals exemplary, B rating equals recognized performance, C rating equals acceptable performance, and a D or F rating equals unacceptable performance. Acceptable performance for a public school would be an A or B rating. The performance rating of each school would be made available on or before August 8 of each year and provides that commissioner notify the school of a D or F rating on or before June 15 of each year.
Vote Recommendation Notes
This bill would provide more clarity to the public school rating system and more transparency for public school performance allowing for schools to be held to a higher standard of accountability by parents and taxpayers who fund them, therefore we support this legislation on the principle of limited government.
