Bill Caption
Relating to making a voluntary contribution to the Special Olympics Texas fund when registering a motor vehicle or renewing a motor vehicle registration.
Fiscal Notes
No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.
Bill Analysis
The legislation would amend the Transportation Code to allow the Department of Motor
Vehicles (DMV) to give individuals renewing or registering their car the option to make a voluntary contribution in any amount to the Special
Olympics Texas fund.
Vote Recommendation Notes
This legislation would allow the DMV to accept a voluntary contribution from those individuals who are registering their vehicles to be given to the Texas Special Olympics fund. Currently, there are several different organizations that the DMV is permitted to accept contributions to. We remain neutral, as this does not weigh for or against the principles that we consider when providing analysis. However, we do note that it may not be in the best interests of the state to have state agencies promoting certain charities over others. Perhaps it is best to leave the promotion of, and collection for, charitable contributions outside of the realm of state business.
