Bill Caption
Relating to the determination of resident status of students by public institutions of higher education.
Bill Analysis
This legislation amends section 54.052 of the Education Code in relation to the Determination of Resident status to disallow person who is not authorized under federal statute to
be present in the United States may not be considered a resident of
this state for purpose of receiving in-state tuition. It does, however, exempt those illegal immigrants who currently receive in-state
tuition and have at least 30 hours of credit.
Vote Recommendation Notes
Reports show that roughly 20,000 illegal immigrants have benefited over time from in-state tuition spots in Texas universities. We support this legislation for promoting individual liberty, as these benefits are specifically dedicated for legal Texas residents who would like to pursue higher education.
