Bill Caption
Relating to the violation of certain court orders or conditions of bond in a family violence, sexual assault or abuse, stalking, or trafficking case.
Fiscal Notes
No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.
Bill Analysis
SB 147 would amend current statute to treat human trafficking crimes, including bond violators, the same way and under the same statute as family violence, sexual assault or abuse, and stalking. This bill cleans up the penal code by consolidating similar statutes and removing superfluous language.
Vote Recommendation Notes
We support SB 147 for preserving the individual liberty of victims of trafficking by prosecuting offenses against them in a more appropriate way and further protecting them from those that have previously violated them. This bill by cleaning up the penal code also supports limited government. It is up to our legislators to keep the code simple enough for citizens to read and understand. This bill is an important to step to both preserving victims rights and preserving every citizen’s ability to understand the laws that guide us.
