Bill Caption

Fiscal Notes

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

This legislation would require a candidate to provide a campaign mailing address on ballot applications instead of a residence address so that a campaign address would be posted on the Secretary of State’s website in lieu of a personal home mailing address.

Vote Recommendation Notes

We support this legislation for it's commitment of promoting individual liberty by allowing those who choose to run for office to protect personal information that can be used by political opponents to intimidate candidates and their families. There are enough well documented cases of candidate intimidation at their personal home that this seems a wise provision. This information would still potentially be available though campaign financial disclosure forms but this bill would at least make it a little more difficult for would-be intimidators to discover the information.

It is important to note that this legislation in no way alters current law regarding residency requirements in order to run for office. This bill only would change the address information for a campaign or candidate that would be publicly published to the Secretary of State's website.
